Why We Are Here |
Our Faith · Societies moral example should be modeled by Christ’s Living Body, the Church · In the United States, the penitentiary system was begun by the church as a place of quiet isolation where a person could recognize their misbehavior and repent. The word is a derivative of the root word penitence. As problems began to grow, the church turned penitence to the state. · The bible tells us, ‘… inasmuch as you did to the least of these, you did unto me …’ For Society · Corrections is generally the second largest State/Federal expense · It costs an average of $60,000 per year to maintain each person in prison · The cost of imprisoning one individual is approximately 4 times the cost to send one of our own children to college. · Each rehabilitated person represents over $200,000 overall savings in tax expenditures For the Children · The average inmate in the United States prison systems parents six children · Children of jailed parents are more likely to go to prison themselves: 70% if only one parent is jailed, and 90% more likely if both parents are jailed · Many children of prisoners have never met one, or both, of their parents. These children often live with grandparents, family or friends in poverty. · One rehabilitated offender impacts at least 7 people For the Person · Most people are released without adequate identification, job, housing, money, clothing, or transportation to succeed. · Their total possessions must fit in the 1 square foot box · 85% of persons return to prison within their lifetimes—many for lack of life’s basic requirements · Transition assisted persons are 40% less likely to return to prison
