Transition Centers provide training, housing and mentoring services to persons leaving prison and returning to free society.  Participation is optional to any person leaving a State prison.  All services are provided from a non-denominational Christian perspective as Transition Centers coordinate with supervisory agencies to enforce reentry plans and monitor resident behavior.

Transitions, TLC, and Transition Centers are a unique concept.  Centers are not halfway houses for individuals recovering from mental or physical damage, addiction, or trauma.  Neither are they another level of imprisonment. The Transition Center is a structured Christian environment focusing on removing obstacles to success.  Transitions, TLC, builds and maintains Transition Centers as Christian-based, short-term centers where ex-offenders can build solid foundations for successful living prior to entering free society.  At this time, no other agency provides this critical service—particularly from a Christian perspective.

Ex-offenders are a unique group.  While they may not have a home to go to, they have significantly different psychodynamics than the homeless.  While many have histories with addictions, returning to addiction facilities serves to reinforce and reintroduce them to the drug culture and its current members.  There is a significant difference between ex-offenders from the prison system and those serving short terms in local institutions primarily in the areas of absence of personal assets, family relationships, psychological brokenness; or willingness to change.  Therefore, attempting to integrate this unique group into facilities designed for other purposes often serves to exaggerate the problems of adjusting to free society. Transition Centers act as facilitators with existing agencies, directly providing only those services which cannot be obtained elsewhere while recognizing the special needs of this special population

Prior to admission, each resident will develop a transition plan with personal goals that address issues such as employment, transportation, housing, probation and parole, banking, custody, counseling, medical and family relations.  The transition plan becomes a contract between the resident and their residential Transition Center.  Upon reaching their goals, residents may be released from Transition Center supervision and begin independent living.

Target capacity of each Transitions Center is 10 to 15 persons in a semi-residential environment.  Residents may progress from multiple bunk suites emulating institutional environments to private rooms representing independent living after goal achievement.  Evening meals are provided in a family atmosphere.  Cooking and cleaning responsibilities are shared among participants as training toward maintaining a residence.

Mandatory weekly group counseling will cover transition issues; sessions may be scheduled several times per week to accommodate work schedules.  Resident’s children, spouses, and the complete family unit, receive one-on-one mentoring by volunteers and supervised work/study college and  university students.  Weekly programming is mandatory for all residents.  Private pastoral counseling will be provided as requested by staff supervisory pastors.
